Abstract


SYMPTOMS OF EATING DISORDERS SPECIFIC TO SCHOOL SETTINGS, MISTAKES WITH GOOD INTENTIONS, MUST DO AND DON’TS
Eating disorders are serious psychopathologies which usually develop during puberty and early adolescence and proceed with %5 mortality rates. School age is a critical period which is developmentally critical since its overlap with puberty. During that period fluctuations in terms of weight and height are inevitable. Eating disorders are complex psychopathologies which are related with various physical, emotional and behavioral changes. Some behaviors might seem just a little more than an adolescent diet or body dissatisfaction, but when all symptoms handled together it became obvious that there might be a risk for a serious eating disorder. Because of all these mentioned reasons differantiation of physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms of eating disorders at school setting is important. The fact that eating disorders is a psyhopathology with mortality risk is increasing the importance of early detection. If a student shows some of the related symptoms it means there is sufficient reason to be concerned and to direct attention. Therefore symtoms of eating disorders’ at school settings should be known by educators. From this point of view in this article physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms of eating disorders at school setting have been defined. Harmful messages that are given by educators without targeting and mistakes which are results of good intentions have been decsribed. In this article in terms of eating disorder prevention actions that should be done and actions that should be avoided by educators at school settings have also been pointed out.
