Abstract

EVALUATION OF DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION IN TERMS OF ISLAMIC SCIENCES CLASSIFICATION
The Dewey decimal classification is the important classification scheme used widely in the World. Created by Melvil Dewey, this scheme has been developed in order to respond to needs about book classification. In The Dewey decimal classification, the religion of Islam is classified in number 297. Within this numerical value, we can see that the Islamic sciences are divided into ten subheadings. Subheadings are often compatible with the classification of Islamic Sciences academically. However, they have several deficiencies. In this study, the application of the Dewey decimal classification to Islamic science will be examined. When this review is carried out, the applications of the ISAM Library and the NEÜ AKIF Library, two of the most important libraries in the field of Islamic sciences, will also be discussed. Common classification problems are evaluated and suggestions for solution will be given.
