Abstract

THINKING OF SPHERES IN AVICENNA AND COMPARISON WITH ILUMINATIONIST PHILOSOPHY
ABSTRACT: The philosophers of Islam were highly impressed with the ideas of Plato, Aristotle and Ptolemy about spheres which mean the orbits of the planets. The spheres, which have an important place in the emanation perspective of Peripatetic and Iluminationist philosophy are the beings that have minds, souls. They are not enforced but they act willingly. Their movements are continuous and never being interrupted. The spheres which have the highest perfection, affect the earth and cause changes there but in no way change themselves. They have the most perfect spherical shape. The only property they do not have is that they are fixed. The spheres are called barrier in Iluminationist philosophy. Barriers’souls which rule them, are named as managing lights in the Iluminationist system. In this study the views of the Peripatetic philosophers such as al-Fârâbî and Avicenna will be examined and then compared with the thought of Suhrawardi, the founder of Iluminationist. In the study, in particular, the similarities and differences between the views of these two philosophical traditions will be tried to be determined.
